Program Delivery

Utility customers come in all shapes and sizes. Effective programs capitalize on diverse groups of customers to provide useful, cost effective services.

EMC Insights works with utilities and program administrators from across North America to develop creative solutions to improve program delivery. Our staff’s diverse skill set can help research, discover, and design programs to optimally serve both broad or laser-focused groups of customers.

EMC Insights' diverse group of industry experts is here to help your program.
  • Technical consulting by providing detailed engineering analysis, programmatic data analytics, or project specific measurement and verification
  • Program savings development, measure characterization, and program cost effectiveness testing
  • Participant, trade ally, and peer group studies to validate or discover insights from market actors across the program’s influence spectrum

Advanced M&V

Advanced meter infrastructure (AMI) investment is real, and can be leveraged by skilled evaluators to supplement, build-upon, or even replace traditional M&V.

EMC Insights' Advanced M&V models, tools, and protocols are designed to take advantage of more widely available electric and natural gas AMI investments. We use AMI data to verify program savings, as well as provide deeper insights into the time-value of efficiency resources. EMC Insights' library of advanced M&V tools has the capability to both utilize traditional statistical modeling and adapt newer algorithms, such as artificial neural networks, from other industries to improve evaluation accuracy while reducing costs.

Benefits of EMC Insights' Advanced M&V Tools:

  • Tested and cross validated models compliant with IPMVP, NMEC, ASHRAE, and CALTRACK.
  • Leverage existing AMI and customer operational data to improve accuracy
  • Transparent, well documented, and proven modeling techniques

Energy Audits

Energy Efficiency saves money and can improve company cash flow today. An Energy Audit is the first step on the path to better energy management.

Whether it’s been a while since your last audit, or you have never examined your facilities’ energy usage, EMC Insights' staff of experienced auditors can help. Our staff have visited facilities across the globe, and can quickly and effectively analyze your buildings’ energy performance. EMC Insights' team of data scientists can also work with your utility data to disaggregate loads and garner insights into when and how facilities spend their energy dollars.

We offer different levels of detail depending on the needs of the facility.

  • Preliminary Energy Use Analysis. Using energy use alone to benchmark your facility at a high level to other similar facilities
  • ASHRAE Level 1. A high-level audit consisting of an interview, energy history analysis, and brief facility walkthrough. The goal is to identify low-cost/no-cost measures to implement today, and list potential capital measures for the future
  • ASHRAE Level 2. Takes a Level 1 audit one step further by including detailed end-use energy calculations and completing a financial assessment. We discuss equipment operation with multiple facility staff, and develop recommendations that meet the facilities longer term goals
  • ASHRAE Level 3. Adds additional rigor to a Level 2 audit by adding sub-meter or specific equipment data analyses. The outcome is a detailed review of capital intensive measures recommended during a Level 2 audit to develop investment grade results

Engineering & Inspection

Measuring savings with accurate engineering models is important for the success of energy conservation programs.

EMC Insights provides complete engineering and inspection services in support of performance contracts or other projects where proven energy savings are required. Our engineering staff has performed short and long-term monitoring at numerous facilities. We are experienced with leading measurement and evaluation (M&V) protocols, including the International Performance Measurement and Verification Protocol (IPMVP), the Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP) application of the protocol, and California’s Standard Performance Contract (SPC) protocols. Our metering capabilities allow us to complete Option B approaches for verifying savings at relatively lower cost. We are also analytical software for performing whole building billing analyses (IPMVP Option C) and have the expertise required to perform calibrated simulation verifications (IPMVP Option D).

Recognized Benefit:

  • Accurate measurement & verification of program impacts
  • Low cost site inspection and metering services
  • Access to large tool crib of metering devices

Buildings often don’t operate exactly as intended, leaving significant amounts of money on the table for building owners.

Retrocommissioning studies strive to ensure that your building is operating at peak performance. Optimized buildings reduce operating costs, while maintaining or improving occupant comfort. EMC Insights' team of experienced engineers dig deep into facility controls, schedules, maintenance, and overall operation to find low cost and no cost improvements.

We offer several types of studies geared towards different types of customers

  • RCx Lite. Tailored to small and medium buildings 150,000 ft2 or less
  • Retrocommissioning. Larger studies for larger buildings with more complicated systems, controls, and needs
  • Auto-RCx. Similar to RCx lite, but completed entirely remotely. Interval data, building automation system data, and a phone interview is all that’s required
